Ascension Episcopal School Joins Model UN for the First Time

Ascension Episcopal School
For the first time since the establishment of its Upper School, Ascension Episcopal School proudly participated in Model United Nations (MUN), a student-run simulation of the United Nations that challenges participants to engage in global diplomacy, policy-making, and legal proceedings. This event, organized by the YMCA of the Capital Area, brought high school students across Louisiana together to represent different nations in discussions on pressing international issues.

Ascension’s journey to MUN began last semester when Junior Amir Balbeisi expressed his interest in participating and sought sponsorship for the event. After successfully applying for membership, Ascension was assigned the country of Namibia and granted the opportunity to send two delegates. Amir then enlisted fellow Junior Luke Harris to join him in crafting Namibia’s profile and preparing resolutions to advocate for the nation’s interests.

From Thursday, March 13, to Saturday, March 15, nearly 500 students and faculty sponsors gathered in Baton Rouge for the highly anticipated conference. Over the course of two days, delegates engaged in intense debates, collaborated with other nations, and voted on resolutions in both general and breakout sessions. In an environment that demanded strong writing skills, persuasive arguments, and strategic collaboration, Ascension’s delegation excelled. Their efforts resulted in the approval of two resolutions, earning them recognition in the conference’s closing sessions.

While the conference schedule was rigorous and the stakes were high, students also enjoyed opportunities to unwind and connect with peers from other schools. Special events such as the Country Showcase, a general assembly banquet, a MUN FUN trivia session, and a dance provided a balance of diplomacy and camaraderie.

With a successful first showing at MUN, Ascension Episcopal School is already looking forward to returning next year—this time with a larger delegation. The experience has not only enriched the students’ understanding of international relations but also strengthened their confidence in research, debate, and leadership.

Congratulations to Amir Balbeisi and Luke Harris for representing Ascension with excellence on the global stage!
