Theatre

Theatre is a crucial art form for teaching students how to relate to the world around them. At Ascension Episcopal School, we value this art form for the many benefits it offers. Students gain confidence, public speaking skills, the ability to work as a team, interview and audition skills, ways to think creatively, and heightened social consciousness.
Theatre training begins at a very early age at Ascension. Preschool students have many performance opportunities, as well as ways to express their creativity through theatrical activities. Lower and middle school students perform in a class musical at every grade, a tradition at Ascension for many years. Introducing theatre at such a young age helps many overcome stage fright and the fear of public speaking.

Each year, our fifth graders perform a full-length musical as a class, and our sixth and seventh graders have the option to perform a full-length musical as an extra-curricular activity.

Once students arrive at our Upper School Campus, theater class is offered as a fine-arts elective. They learn skills such as auditioning, public speaking, film acting, and stage performances. All students can perform in a fully staged play and musical each school year.

Our goal is to develop gentle, generous, truthful, kind, and brave students. We genuinely believe theatre strengthens these qualities in children. We view theatre as an essential skill.

Oscar Wilde

I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.
