More Than a Classroom: A February of Real-World Learning at Ascension

Ascension Episcopal School
February was a powerful reminder of what makes learning at Ascension Episcopal School different: it is active, connected, and deeply rooted in community.

In Earth Science, our 6th graders became the teachers. After studying the lunar cycle, they designed original board games that accurately modeled moon phases while incorporating strategy and creativity. When they rotated around the room playing one another’s games, they weren’t just reviewing for a test — they were reinforcing understanding through collaboration, discussion, and laughter. When students have to teach a concept, it sticks.
Our 7th graders tackled the age-old question: “When will I ever use this?” After learning to calculate the interior angles of polygons, they headed outside to measure the angles of our gaga pit — a perfect octagon. The math worked. That discovery sparked a real-world conversation about how contractors rely on precise angles in construction. They then stepped into leadership, teaching second graders how to use protractors, and even proved the Pythagorean Theorem using Starburst candies. Math became practical, memorable, and fun.

Meanwhile, our 5th graders returned from their beloved Washington, D.C. trip — a treasured Ascension tradition. Over four unforgettable days, they toured the U.S. Capitol, visited Arlington National Cemetery, explored Smithsonian museums, experienced a moonlight monument tour, and laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. One student described the Museum of the Bible as “Jesus’s theme park,” capturing the wonder of hands-on discovery. This first big trip builds independence, confidence, and lifelong friendships while bringing classroom lessons to life.

Even our youngest Blue Gators participated in meaningful learning. During National Dental Awareness Month, parent professionals provided animal X-rays and led hands-on lessons on healthy smiles and animal teeth — a beautiful example of how it truly takes a village.

At Ascension, students don’t just memorize information. They think critically, lead boldly, explore deeply, and grow into who they are meant to become.
