Preparing for What’s Next: Seniors Gain Real-World Insight Through Speaker Series
Ascension Episcopal School
Ascension Episcopal School recently concluded its Words of Wisdom Senior Speaker Series, a four-week program designed to prepare the Class of 2026 for the transition from high school to college and beyond.
Held each Friday during lunch over the course of four weeks, the series brought together Ascension alumni and community professionals to share practical advice on academics, mental health, social life, and financial readiness. Organized by the School Counseling and College Counseling offices, the initiative aimed to equip seniors with the tools and perspective needed to navigate the challenges of early adulthood.
The series began with a session on academic success in college, led by Courtney Schoolmaster, Assistant Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs and Assistant Professor of English at South Louisiana Community College. She offered insight into college-level expectations, grading realities, and the importance of academic integrity, while emphasizing the habits that lead to long-term success.
The second session focused on mental health and safety. Faith Abshire, PLPC, of The Authenticity Center, addressed common stressors students face during the transition to college and shared strategies for managing anxiety and burnout. She was joined by Sergeant Lance Frederick of the UL Lafayette Police Department, who spoke about decision-making and personal safety on campus.
During the third week, five Presidential Student Ambassadors from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette led a discussion on building a healthy social life in college. Topics included navigating dorm living, Greek life, and finding meaningful involvement without overcommitting.
The series concluded with a session on financial and career success, featuring Ascension alumni Jake Vascocu ’18 and Maddie Thibeaux ’18. Drawing from their professional experiences, they offered guidance on avoiding common financial pitfalls, understanding student debt, and maximizing opportunities for career growth through networking and internships.
Through Words of Wisdom, Ascension continues its commitment to preparing students not only for college, but for life beyond the classroom.
