Ascension Partners with Local School to Fight Food Insecurity Through 52 Shepherds Initiative
Ascension Episcopal School
Ascension Episcopal School is honored to partner with Gethsemane Christian Academy through the 52 Shepherds program—a community initiative dedicated to keeping a local school food pantry stocked every week of the year.
Led by Ascension’s Upper School Leadership Class, this effort provides a consistent source of support for families at Gethsemane experiencing food insecurity. Through the program, Ascension families help supply non-perishable food items that are distributed within the school community.
Several Ascension families have already participated in the initiative, demonstrating the school’s shared commitment to service, generosity, and compassion. In addition to meeting a tangible need, the partnership offers students a powerful opportunity to put their faith into action and experience the impact of serving others.
Recently, members of Ascension’s student leadership team took part by delivering food to the pantry. Community Service Prefect Chloe Schouest reflected on the experience:
“It was a really great experience where I got to give back to those less fortunate alongside my friends. On the Friday morning we were assigned, we went to a nearby grocery store and purchased around $200 worth of non-perishable food items. After that, the delivery process at Gethsemane was quick and easy. We unloaded the groceries, and the children were there to receive them, which was really special. It put a smile on my face for the rest of the day and allowed me to be part of something bigger than myself. Overall, it was a great experience.”
Through partnerships like this, Ascension continues to foster a culture where students are encouraged not only to grow academically but also to lead lives marked by empathy, service, and purpose.
We are grateful to the many families who have already committed to serving as Shepherds and helping sustain this important effort.
The Episcopal Church of the Ascension School (Ascension Episcopal School) admits qualified students without regard to race, religion, sexual orientation, or national origin. We are a welcoming community.
