Throughout the service, students helped introduce this year’s school verse from 1 Corinthians 16:13–14: “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love.” Students representing kindergarten, Lower School, Middle School, and Upper School each shared a portion of the verse, showing that its message belongs to every Blue Gator, regardless of age.

A simple rope helped bring that message to life. Rather than using it for a tug-of-war, students were invited to see it as a symbol of connection. At Ascension, we are not called to pull against one another. We are called to hold onto one another.

That means reaching for someone who is struggling, helping someone who falls, and making room for someone who is new. It also means refusing to define people by their mistakes and understanding that when someone is hurting, we do not always need the perfect answer. Sometimes, we simply need to stay.

Rector Fr. Matt Ainsley offered a message to the school community, and Ascension’s senior Prefects gave students a charge for the year. Speaking directly to children in each division, they shared how courage, faith, and love can take shape at every age—from sharing a favorite toy to speaking up when someone is excluded, trying again after disappointment, and standing firm in what is right.

Their leadership reflected the heart of the day. Although Ascension students span many ages and learn across three campuses, they belong to one school family. The people beside them will become part of their stories—encouraging them, challenging them and sometimes needing their friendship more than they realize.

Opening Convocation was more than a celebration of a new school year. It was a reminder of the community Ascension is called to be: one that holds fast to faith, makes room for others and allows love to guide everything we do.
